Pios Win Streak Runs to 2!

After capturing the first win of the season a night ago up in Batavia, the Pioneers returned home to Dunn Field to battle an Oneonta Outlaws team who have already seen their fair share of early-season struggles.

The Pioneers sent Chris Mattoon from Alfred State who looked to build off a strong spring to the bump to start it off to oppose current Binghamton Bearcats closer Tanner Beang.

Mattoon got off to a rough start as after only allowing a walk in the first inning, was roughed by for four in the second frame by a hungry Oneonta offense. Elmira rebounded with a run in the bottom of the third when Chris Erickson's walk turned into just a three-run deficit as Sam Polanco drove a single to the gap.

The Pioneers you go we go hitter in Donovan Montgomery got the offense rolling again in the fourth inning with a leadoff walk, and what followed was a five-run frame that saw just a single hit to the board as after four Elmira led 6-4, forcing Tanner Beang out of the game.

Both teams went down quietly until the 8th inning when the hometown side cashed in another on an RBI single from Ben Schorr to stretch the lead to 7-4. Kevin Serrano pitched 5 shutout innings in relief of Mattoon as Elmira moves to 2-1 on the summer.

The Pios have another game scheduled for 4:05 tomorrow vs Jamestown as the Tarp Skunks make their first ever appearance in Elmira. Grab your tickets now by calling 607-734-2690 and come check out your 2021 Elmira Pioneers.
