Pios Take Early Lead, But Fall in Playoffs to Geneva 5-4
Elmira came into the first round of the playoffs with vengeance on their mind as a Red Wings team who had beat them last season in the first round of the PGCBL playoffs waited in the first round. The Pioneers were convinced this was to be their year and came out with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove.
In the first inning the Pios continued to ride hot bats as they put up a three spot after a Jeff Mejia single, a Trae Harmon single, and a Bryce Moskiewicz walk were all driven in by a Kyle Richardson triple. As Tom Cattaneo took the mound with a three run lead, things seemed to fall in place for the Pioneers. Cattaneo put in six strong innings allowing just two runs on five hits. Elmira added to their lead in the sixth as Brennen Dorighi doubled only to be driven in by Richardson again.
Unfortunately that would be all the Pioneers could do as Connor Takacs came into the game and struggled his way through the seventh and eighth innings. Though Takacs would take a one run lead into the ninth inning and record the first out, the next two batters doubled and Thursal White made it to third on the throw from the outfield with the game tied. The Pios loaded the bases and crowded the infield, but a sharp single proved to be a walk off for the Red Wings who claimed victory for the second year in a row.
The Pioneers would like to thank all of our sponsors, season ticket holders, staff, host families, fans and players. It was another exciting year of Elmira Pioneers Baseball and we want to remind you that .....WE WILL BACK FOR THE 2020 SEASON. GO PIOS GO!!!
