Pioneers Win 6-5 over Geneva

The Pioneers hit the road last night for another early evening Sunday contest as they matched up with the Geneva Red Wings for the second time in four days. Elmira captured a walkoff win 5-4 in the Thursday night affair at Dunn Field and despite dropping a road Friday game in Jamestown, were riding high off a 10-3 performance on Saturday night when the bats came alive.

Coming off the bus, Andy Drum handed the ball to Samford University product Logan Jones to get it started. Jones had grabbed a win in his lone start prior but wasn't going to have a cakewalk as the Red Wings countered with the tough right-hander out of St. Lawrence, Andrew Matthews.

Matthews day got off to a rocky start as he got punched around by Elmira for three runs in the top of the 1st inning. After a couple of singles from Donovan Montgomery and Ben Schorr, two fielding errors by Geneva, a hit by pitch, and a clutch two out two RBI single from Elmilien Pitrie roared the Pios out to a quick 3-0 lead.

Jones had a rocky afternoon and just never seemed to settle into the game, leaving after three strenuous innings with the score knotted up 3 aside. The Red Wings played a little small ball bringing one in courtesy of a fielders choice in the 2nd, just as they did to bring in another in the 3rd before a wild pitch evened the game.

After a quiet three middle innings, the Pioneers finally got the bats moving again in the 7th. Gil Merod in a 2-2 count blasted a single in to the gap in left center field to bring around Justin Taylor and Aaron Thomas, pushing his side back to a 2 run lead, 5-3. The winning run would ultimately be plated in the top of the eighth inning. Chris Erickson's wacky trip around the bases ended when Bobby Marsh scorched a double to drive him in. Elmira carried a 6-3 lead in to the bottom of the eighth and even though Andrew LaCour struggled, allowing two Geneva runs home, the defense picked him up and the Pios grabbed a 6-5 tight win to move to 6-4.

Elmira is back in action tonight at 7:05pm at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia for an exhibtion contest vs the Muckdogs. Catch the game live on YouTube and Mixlr!
