Hayes Goes Seven Scoreless to Split Newark Doubleheader
By Anthony La Bonté
ELMIRA, NY—Brenden Hayes threw his best performance of the season Saturday, in the game two victory, 5-0, in a doubleheader against the Newark Pilots, at Historic Dunn Field.
Hayes hit the double-digit strikeout mark in the seven innings, by punching out ten while not allowing a single run and only allowing eight to get on.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Pilots would score six unanswered runs over the Elmira Pioneers for a 6-4 win. Kevin Prosceo (1-1) threw five innings to where five runs would score with three being earned.
The Pioneers would only have four hits throughout the seven-inning contest, with a two-run single by Tyler Adamo bringing runners home. Two of those hits would come from the fourth inning onwards.
Game two, where Hayes shined, saw multi-hit games from Nick Spaner and Brett Baker. The game also had the mark of being one of the few games where the defense played perfect for the Pioneers—no errors on the game.
Elmira is now 12-12 on the season. The next games for Pioneers is the home doubleheader on Sunday, July 5, against the Jamestown Tarpskunks for Chemung Canal Trust Night. For ticket information call (607) 734-2690.
