ELMIRA, N.Y. – A seven-run sixth inning did in the Elmira Pioneers (24-21) as they lost to the Newark Pilots (18-27) by a final score of 12-8 on Wednesday evening at Dunn Field.

The Pioneers got on the board first with a big five-run second inning. An error by the shortstop Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River C.C) allowed two runs to score as the Pioneers jumped out in front first. A subsequent throwing error from the first baseman Peter Battaglia (Niagara) allowed another run to score before Colton Evans (UC- Davis) singled home the fourth run of the frame. Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) capped off the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Newark responded immediately with a run of their own in the top of the third. After loading the bases on two hit batsmen and a walk, Hackbarth drove home Newark’s first run with a sacrifice fly to right.

In the fifth, the Pilots would continue to chip away at the Pioneers lead as they plated two more. Hackbarth would again pick up the RBIs, this time driving in two with a single to center making the score 5-3.

Still trailing by two in the sixth, Newark would break the game open with a seven-run inning. Two straight errors with the bases loaded brought home the tying runs for Newark and two subsequent walks would push home the go-ahead runs making the score 7-5. Hunter Wells (Tyler J.C) then blooped a single to right plating two more runs and pushing the Pilots lead to four. Will Allocca (Virginia) brought home the seventh run of the frame with an RBI groundout to third.

The Pioneers would attempt to get back into the game in the seventh inning with a three run frame which cut the deficit to two. With two outs, Conor Grammes (Xavier) tripled to center scoring Gilbert and was immediately followed by an Ayrton Schafer (Samford) double which scored Grammes. Allbry Major (Xavier) then brought home Schafer with a bloop single to left which made the score 10-8.

Newark would put the game away in the ninth however, as they plated two insurance runs. Hackbarth would pick up his foruth RBI of the night as he singled home Josh Loeffler (UConn). Hackbarth would then score on a double to right-center from Wells.

The Pioneers would go down silently in the ninth, as Kyle Griffen (LA Tech) shut the door to end the game.

Adam Donovan (DeSales) gets his second consecutive win over the Pioneers, as he worked six and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs, four earned, while striking out four.

For the Pioneers, Josh Smith (Kentucky) is dealt the loss after giving up seven runs, five earned, in just one inning of work.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday, July 27th, at Diethrick Park to take on the Jamestown Jammers at 7:05.
