ELMIRA, N.Y. – Bradley Griggs (UTSA) and Isaac Meza (CSU Bakersfield) pitched the Jamestown Jammers (29-13) to victory over the Elmira Pioneers (22-20) as the duo combined to shutout Elmira by a final score of 5-0 on Saturday evening at Dunn Field.

Griggs ran into trouble in the first inning when after a Conor Grammes (Xavier) double put runners at second and third with one out. But Griggs struck out Allbry Major (Xavier) and got Ayrton Schafer (Samford) to ground out to end the inning with no damage.

The Jammers would take the lead in the top of the third inning thanks to a four run frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Estrada (UTSA) blooped a single to left that scored two runs, while a third came around to score on an errant throw home which also allowed Estrada to go to third. Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst) then beat out an infield single to score Estrada and put Jamestown up 4-0.

In the seventh inning, an error by the third baseman Andrew Orzel (Wofford) on a groundball hit by Estrada allowed Ben Brookover (UTSA) to score from third and put the Jammers up 5-0.

Five runs would be more than enough for the combination of Griggs and Meza. Griggs would go on to throw six and one-third innings of shutout baseball while striking out three and allowing only three hits. The victory is the fourth of the season for Griggs as he improves his record to four wins and two losses.

Meza would follow Griggs with two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to finish off the game. Meza struck out four hitters, including the side in the ninth, while allowing just two hits.

Grant Donahue (Virginia) is hung with the loss, his first of the season. Donahue fired five innings of four run baseball, three of them earned, while striking out five.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, July 23rd, at 5:05 to take on the Glens Falls Dragons at Dunn Field.
