Manager Brian Hill to lead PGCBL West All-Star team with Seven Pioneers players

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers are excited to announce the selections of catcher Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan), infielder Conor Grammes (Xavier), second baseman Troy Dixon (Samford), shortstop Brett Rodriguez, outfielder Ayrton Schafer (Samford), and pitchers Grant Donahue (Virginia) and Houston Roth (Ole Miss) to the PGCBL Western Division All-Star team. Manager Brian Hill was also selected to be the manager for the Western Division club.
Since arriving to the team on June 15, Gilbert has been a stalwart in the middle of the Pioneers order. On the season, Gilbert currently leads the Pioneers in all three triple crown categories, hitting .365 with three home runs and 23 runs driven in.
Grammes, a freshman from Xavier University, has excelled while playing a variety of positions. Grammes has displayed tremendous versatility as he has made a start at each infield position this season. Grammes has also wielded a dangerous bat having slugged two home runs while hitting .354 with 18 RBI. Grammes has also made three scoreless appearances on the mound, resulting in two saves in as many opportunities. In addition to participating in the All-Star game, Grammes has been selected to participate in the home run derby.
Despite only playing in 13 games, Troy Dixon has made his presence felt as he has hit .326 while driving in 13 runs and scoring 16 times. For Dixon, this is his second consecutive selection to the PGCBL All-Star game.
Rodriguez, the starting shortstop for the Pioneers, has been a spark plug all season at the top of the Pioneers order. Rodriguez has hit .294 on the season with one home run and 15 RBI while scoring 26 times which leads the ball club. Rodriguez has added in 11 stolen bases in 12 chances.
Dixon’s Samford teammate, Ayrton Schafer will also be making the trip to Amsterdam for the All-Star game thanks to a solid campaign. Schafer leads the team in hits with 31 on the season while hitting .298 with 18 RBI.
After being named PGCBL pitcher of the week, the accolades continue to roll in for Grant Donahue as he was named to the All-Star team for his efforts. The sophomore is 3-0 on the season with a minuscule 1.05 ERA in 25.2 innings pitched. Donahue has also punched out 28 hitters while only walking 14.
The other Pioneer pitcher selected to the All-Star game is Ole Miss freshman Houston Roth. Roth made headlines earlier this season with his complete-game 20 strikeout performance against Newark. On the season, Roth is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched.
The All-Star game will be on Tuesday, July 18th, in Amsterdam at Shuttleworth Park and will begin at 7:05.
