ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Despite an early 3-0 lead, the Elmira Pioneers(3-2) suffered defeat at the hands of the Geneva Red Wings(3-1) by the score of 8-7 in 10 innings.

Zach Eggers(Old Dominion) was handed the ball for the Pioneers, as in his second start of the year he worked five scoreless frames and left the game in line for the win with the Pioneers leading the game 3-0.

Elmira scored those three runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to RBI singles from Brett Rodriguez(Wofford) and Blake Shinkle(Kansas) and an RBI fielder’s choice from Anthony Nucerino(UConn). However on that fielder’s choice, Joe Preziuso(Canisius) would try to score from second and would be gunned down to end the inning and limit the Pio’s to just three runs.

From there, Elmira would be held scoreless for the next four innings as Jordan Murphy(UT Dallas) would settle in and end up leaving the game with Geneva on top 6-3.

Geneva took that 6-3 lead thanks to a six run outburst in the top of the 7th. Three walks from relief pitcher Alvin Vega(Canisius) would load the bases and a hit batsman would push across the first run of the frame. Justin Barr(Central Alabama C.C) then stroked a single back up the middle that would plate two and knot the score at three. Mikey Arman(Kenyon) followed him with an RBI double that gave Geneva their first lead of the game. After a pitching change, two Bryce Zaparzynski(Mansfield) wild pitches would allow two more Red Wings to score making it a 6-3 ball game.

Elmira responded immediately with two in the bottom half of the 7th. After Brett Rodriguez walked to open the inning, Joe Preziuso brought him home with a triple to left field. Blake Shinkle then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Preziuso and bring the Pioneers to within one.

The Pioneers would tie the game in the bottom of the 8th, as with Ayrton Schafer(Samford) on third with two out, Garret Swanson(Kalamazoo) uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Schafer to cross the plate with the tying run.

Elmira nearly won the game in the bottom of the 9th, as the Pio’s had the bases loaded after an Anthony Nucerino walk, Jon Crimmin(Siena) single, and an intentional walk to Ayrton Schafer. Allbry Major(Xavier) stepped to the plate looking to be the hero, but after a 10 pitch battle, he went down swinging to extinguish the threat.

Geneva would move ahead in the first extra frame by tacking on two runs. Will Simoneit(Cornell) singled to open the frame and Trustin Riley(Tampa) moved him to second with a single of his own. Following a successful double steal, Matt Collins(Cornell) brought home the go ahead run with a sac fly to center. Matt Chamberlain(New Haven) added an insurance run with a line drive single off the glove of Joe Preziuso at third to make it an 8-6 game.

Elmira would push one across in the bottom of the 10th on a bases loaded walk to Chris Davignon(Siena), but Jon Crimmin flew out to center with the bases loaded to end the ball game.

Reece Maniscalco(Wofford) takes the loss for Elmira. Maniscalco worked 2.2 innings and allowed the two go ahead runs to Geneva.

Colby Mullins(Andrew) gets the win for Geneva. Mullins worked two scoreless frames out of the pen, striking out two.

The Pioneers will look to get back on track tomorrow, Thursday, June 8th, when they face the Onondaga Flames at 7:05 p.m. at Historic Dunn Field.
