ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers (11-13) have now reeled off five wins in their last six games, including four in a row, after defeating the Newark Pilots (5-20) by a final score of 11-3 at Dunn Field on Friday evening.
The Pilots jumped out to an early lead in the first when Will Allocca (Virginia) singled home a run to open the scoring. Later in the inning, Allocca stole third base and would subsequently score when the throw from catcher Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) sailed into left field.
Elmira would respond immediately in the bottom of the first and plate three runs, all with two outs, to take the lead. Gilbert blasted a ball off the left-center field wall that scored Troy Dixon (Samford) from first to get one run back. Gilbert was then sent home on a double by Ayrton Schafer (Samford) who would score the go ahead run on a single by Conor Grammes (Xavier).
The Pioneers would double their lead in the second frame thanks to an RBI single from Dixon to right field that scored Joe Preziuso (Canisius).
Dixon would strike again in the fourth, this time singling home Blake Shinkle (Kansas) to extend the Pioneers lead to 5-2.
Elmira would blow things open with a five run fifth inning. Schafer doubled to lead off the inning and immediately scored following a Conor Grammes single back through the box. Jon Crimmin (Siena) joined in on the fun when he bounced a ball through the left side for an RBI single that scored Grammes. Colton Evans (UC-Davis) kept the line moving with an RBI single of his own before Dixon picked up his fourth hit of the game, another RBI single that plated the fourth run of the inning. Gilbert followed Dixon with his own RBI base hit to cap off the five run frame.
The Pilots would add a run in the top of the eighth thanks to a Mark McKenna (Canisius) RBI single but that would be the only run the Pilots could add after their two run first inning.
That run would be matched in the bottom of the eighth thanks to Colton Evans’ second RBI single of the day.
Jake Hamilton (Kentucky) gets his second win of the season after tossing six innings and giving up just two runs. Hamilton induced three double plays off of Newark bats en route to picking up the victory.
Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung) is dealt the loss for the Pilots. Wang threw four innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, while allowing 12 hits.
The Pioneers will be playing again at Dunn Field tomorrow, Saturday, July 1st, against the Capital City Reds at 7:05. Fireworks will follow the completion of the game.
