UTICA, N.Y. – After trailing by as many as five, the Elmira Pioneers (9-13) staged a late comeback to steal a win from the Utica Blue Sox (4-18) by a final score of 10-8.
Utica jumped out to an early lead thanks two runs in the second inning. Devon Garcia (Ohio) opened the scoring with a twow-strike RBI single to left and the second run of the frame would come home to score on a Jimmy Mendyk (LIU Post) groundout.
The Blue Sox would double their lead in the third with two more runs. A Cole Pursell (Williamette) single scored Rob Andreoli (LIU Post) and then a Zane Harris (Wright State) groundout to first would score Utica’s fourth run of the game.
The lead would be extended to five for Utica in the fourth thanks to another run. After doubling, Adam LaRock (Iowa) came home with Utica’s fifth run when Matthew McDermott (William & Mary) grounded out to short.
The Pioneers cut into Utica’s lead with three runs in the fifth. An RBI double from Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) scored Colton Evans (UC Davis) and Rodriguez would immediately be brought home to score with a double from Andrew Orzel (Wofford). Orzel would come home to score later in the inning when he was driven in on a Marshall Gilbert (John C. Logan) sacrifice fly.
Following the Pioneers first runs of the game, Utica responded with force in the bottom half. Cole Pursell doubled home Andreoli and Pursell would score later in the inning when Zane Hariis grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Elmira would get on back immediately in the sixth when Brayden Combs (Kentucky) homered to right to trim the deficit to three.
However, the lead would be pushed back to four when the Blue Sox put up a run in the bottom half of the inning when an errant throw from Conor Grammes (Xavier) on the tail end of a double play allowed Mendyk to score from second base.
Now trailing by four going into the seventh, the Pioneers would flip the game on its head with a six run seventh frame. Three straight RBI singles by Anthony Nucerino (UConn), Devon Adams (Old Dominion), and Combs closed the gap for Elmira to just one. Then with the bases loaded, a balk by the pitcher Logan Foster (Andrew) brought home the tying run. The Pioneers would take the lead on a two RBI double by Andrew Orzel.
The rest of the game would go by in scoreless fashion, with the Pioneers bullpen battening down the hatches en route to picking up the win.
Noah Hughes picks up the win out of the bullpen. The win pushes his record to 1-1 on the season. TJ Stuart gets credit for the save after collection the final six outs of the game.
Brian Dolan (UMass-Lowell) gets tagged with the loss after throwing just one inning and being charged with seven runs.
Andrew Orzel lead the way offensively for the Pioneers, going three for five with three RBI.
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, Thrusday, June 29th, at 7:05 when they travel to McDonough Park to take on the Geneva Red Wings.
