ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) has announced that Houston Roth (Ole Miss) has been named pitcher of the week for the week ending on June 25th.
In the week prior, Houston turned in an all-time performance against the Newark Pilots, a game which the Pioneers won 2-0. Roth tossed a complete game shutout while striking out a PGCBL record 20 batters. Houston took a perfect game into the seventh inning before it was broken up by a two out double.
Roth’s final line for the game was: nine innings pitched, two hits, no walk, no runs, and 20 strikeouts.
The 20 punch outs by Roth obliterates the previous league record which was 15. In addition, the 20 strikeouts ties the Major League record for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game.
Following an off day on Monday, the Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday, June 27th, at Historic Dunn Field to face the Oneonta Outlaws. The Pio’s will then travel to Utica and Geneva on Wednesday and Thursday before returning home for a three game home stand on June 30th, July 1st and July 2nd. Those home games constitute the USA home stand and in addition the June 30th game against Newark is Pink in the Park. The July 1st game will feature free Save-A-Lot koozies as well as post game fireworks. Free water bottles will be given away for the July 2nd game.
