JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – After coming back from a 5-1 deficit, the Elmira Pioneers(6-7) blew a late lead as they lost to the Jamestown Jammers(10-2) by a final score of 7-6 at Diethrick Park.
Jamestown jumped out to an early lead by plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Following a Ben Brookover(UTSA) triple, Skyler Valentine(UTSA) snuck a ball inside the first base line for a double, scoring Brookover. Chris Estrada(UTSA) would then single through the left side scoring Valentine and giving the Jammers an early 2-0 lead.
In the top half of the 2nd, Brett Rodriguez(Wofford) opened the scoring for Elmira. Rodriguez blasted a solo shot to left, his first as well as Elmira’s first homerun of the season to make the score 2-1.
The Jammers would extend their lead to three in the third. With two men out, Connor Rule(Kansas State) hit a 2 RBI single to left that pushed the score to 4-1 in favor of the Jammers.
In the following frame, Jamestown would tack on another run, courtesy of a Collin Stack(UMBC) no doubt homerun to left.
Elmira would try to claw back into the game when they put two on the board in the 5th. An Anthony Nucerino(UConn) groundout scored Joe Preziuso(Canisius), and then Marshall Gilbert(John A Logan) ripped a double to right-center that scored Blake Shinkle(Kansas) and made the score 5-3 in favor of Jamestown.
The Pioneers comeback would be completed in the 7th when they scored two to tie the game. Anthony Nucerino lead off the inning with a triple to center and was brought home by the next hitter Marshall Gilbert when Gilbert grounded out to second. With two men aboard and two outs, Brett Rodriguez blooped a ball to right that was mishandled by the rightfielder Collin Stack allowing a run to score and for the Pioneers to tie the game.
In the 8th, the Pioneers would take their first lead of the game after Joe Preziuso lead off the frame with a double, and was subsequently sacrificed to third by Blake Shinkle and then brought home to score on an Anthony Nucerino sacrifice fly making the score 6-5 Elmira.
The lead would not last long for the Pioneers. In the bottom half of the 8th, a bases loaded walk from TJ Stuart(Manhattan) allowed the tying run to score. The next hitter, Ben Brookover then lifted a ball to center that was deep enough to score the go ahead run and give the Jammers a 7-6 lead.
Corey Blessing(Ohio) came on to close out the game for Jamestown and struck out Brett Rodriguez to end the ball game.
Chase Austin(Corning C.C) gets saddled with loss out of the Pioneers bullpen. He worked three innings, giving up two runs. His inherited runners were allowed to score by TJ Stuart.
The starter for Jamestown, Bradley Griggs(UTSA) did not factor into the decision despite his strong performance. Griggs tossed six innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven. Connor Ryan(Mercyhurst) picked up the win in relief for the Jammers.
The Pioneers and the Jammers will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, June 18th, for a doubleheader that will begin at 5:05 at Dunn Field.
