Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers are pleased to announce the addition of four more Division One players to the roster for the 2017 season. Xavier University OF/P commit Allbry Major, current Xavier University IF/P Connor Grammes, Samford University OF Ayrton Schafer, and University of Connecticut OF Anthony Nucerino.

Major, a 6’5, 205-pound high school senior from Indianapolis, Indiana, is committed to play for Xavier University next year. Allbry is an athletic outfielder who has run a 6.7 in the 60-yard dash and is also a promising pitcher as he has recently hit 90 on the radar gun while on the mound. Major will contribute to the Pioneers both in the field and on the mound.

Grammes, a 6’1, 195-pound, freshman IF/P from McLean, Virginia, has already made sizeable contributions for Xavier despite it being his first year on campus. Grammes is currently hitting .303 with 10 doubles, 5 home runs, and 29 RBIs. Additionally, he has made 14 appearances on the bump for Xavier, compiling 17 strikeouts in 21 innings. Grammes will also be a two-way player like Major for the Pio’s while also hitting in the middle of the order and playing both first and second base.

Schafer, a freshman OF for Samford University, stands in at 6’2, 225-pounds. Hailing from Colliersville, Tennessee, Schafer has put together an outstanding freshman campaign thus far. Currently he is hitting .274 with 8 home runs and 29 RBIs. Schafer is projected to hit fourth or fifth for the Pio’s and will man the corner outfield positions.

Nucerino, a freshman OF for the UConn Huskies, is originally from Fayetteville, New York and weighs in at 5’10 and 203-pounds. During his high school career at Fayetteville-Manlius, Nucerino was named to First Team All-League twice and Second Team once. During his senior season, Nucerino hit. 351 with 44 stolen bases and 45 RBIs. Nucerino will see a lot of time in the outfield this summer for the Pio’s and will be an exciting player to watch on the base paths.

“We are excited to be adding two power guys (Grammes and Schafer) to our line up as they can change the game with one swing of the bat. We are also very excited to be adding some outstanding speed with Nucerino and Major,” said Pioneers Manager Brian Hill.

Home opening weekend is set for Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd! There will be a spectacular post-game firework show following both games. If you have any questions call the Pioneers front office at 607-734-2690.
