Pioneers Add Four from Old Dominion for 2017 Season

Elmira, N.Y. — The Elmira Pioneers have added four players from Old Dominion University to the roster for this upcoming season. Catcher Devon Adams, shortstop Carson Henry, and left handed pitchers John Wilson and Zach Eggers will all be headed to Elmira following the conclusion of their spring seasons.

 

Adams, a 5’11, 185-pound catcher from South Ridge, VA will be joining the Pioneers following his freshman year with the Monarchs. Adams was a two time All-State second team selection in Virginia. So far, he has appeared in six games for Old Dominion. Adams will be expected to see quite a bit of time behind the plate this summer for the Pioneers.

 

Henry, a 5’11, 185-pound freshman shortstop from Virginia Beach, VA was a was a three year starter at shortstop for his high school, Greenbrier Christian, and helped them win two Virginia state championships. Henry hit .377 with 26 RBIs as a junior in high school and .360 with 11 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs during his senior season. Henry has appeared in seven games thus far for the Monarchs. Henry will man both middle infield positions for the Pioneers.

 

Wilson, a 6’0, 180-pound freshman left handed pitcher from Pittstown, NJ, was a first-team All-State selection his senior year of high school when he went 7-2 with 112 strikeouts in 70 innings and a 1.12 ERA. Wilson was also drafted in the 38th round by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2016 MLB Draft. So far this season, Wilson is 4-0 for the Monarchs with a 2.57 ERA. Wilson will be a key cog in the starting rotation for the Pioneers this summer.

 

Eggers, a 6’0, 190-pound left handed pitcher from Flower Mound, Texas, is currently in the midst of his freshman year at Old Dominion. Eggers was a 2015 Perfect Game Underclass All-American Honorable Mention and was named to the 2015 PG WWBA World Championship All-Tournament Team in Jupiter, Florida. He also helped lead Flower Mound High School to a 25-9 record and a No. 13 ranking in the state. Eggers will play a prominent role in the Pioneers pitching staff.

 

Regarding the signings, manager Brian Hill said, " We are thrilled to get two talented left handed pitchers, one that was drafted, a two-time all state catcher and a highly touted shortstop from Old Dominion University, an excellent baseball program. These four guys will be a great addition to our roster.”

 

The Elmira Pioneers, along with the Hilliard Corporation and Elmira Business Institute, are excited to announce that former Major League pitcher Tommy John will be a special guest at this year’s 3rd annual Elmira Pioneers Hot Stove Dinner. The dinner will take place on Thursday, April 20th at the Holiday Inn Riverview and tickets will cost $50. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tommy John will host a speaking engagement following the dinner which will end with a question and answer session. After the speaking engagement, there will be a live auction which will include Tommy John memorabilia along with many other items, there will also be door prize giveaways. Prior to the dinner and beginning at 5:30, there will be a one hour VIP meet and greet with tickets costing $50. The ticket includes a free Tommy John item for Tommy John to autograph, personalized photo opportunities with Tommy John, free autographs and personalized autographs up to two items and special door prize giveaways. Tickets to the VIP meet and greet and the dinner and speaking engagement will be sold separately.
