Hjelle Throws Complete Game, Pioneers Head Home For Game Three
The Pioneers took on the Utica Blue Sox at Murnane Field in Utica, NY. After falling to Utica yesterday in Game One, Elmira needed a win tonight in order to force a game three back to Historic Dunn Field.
In a back and forth duel between Elmira and Utica, defense was the key difference. With Rob Perteet (Samford) at third and Tyler Plantier (UC San Diego) at first, a double steal would allow Perteet to score the first run and an error would bring Plantier in to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
After Perteet lead off the inning with a double down the third base line, two wild pitches would allow him to cross home plate again to bring the score 3-0 Pioneers.
Another Blue Sox error would bring in Perteet, who lead off the inning with a two out double, in the eighth inning to make it 4-0 for Elmira.
Sean Hjelle (Kentucky) would shut out the Blue Sox in a nine inning gem, only giving up two hits in his win, with six strikeouts. Gus Varland (Concordia University St. Paul) would receive the loss giving up three runs.
The Pioneers and Blue Sox will head to a Game Three tomorrow at Historic Dunn Field. Opening pitch is set to start at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
