Elmira Defeated in Exhibition Matchup With Syracuse Saltcats
It was an interleague matchup between the Elmira Pioneers and the Syracuse Saltcats. It was a day where teams could give different players some more experience on the field and even introduce new players.
Syracuse jumped out early in the 1st inning against Elmira off of starting pitcher Ethan Daily. The Louisiana native gave up three hits, three walks and five runs in 2/3 of an inning before being switched out by fellow Louisiana product, Hayden Frost. Frost would get Christian Sanchez of the Saltcats to ground out to end the first.
Even though the Pioneers gave up an early lead, they would continue to pressure the Saltcats to make mistakes and the Pioneers would keep their at bats alive. They would trail 5-4 at the end of the 2nd inning after taking advantage of six hits, all singles, and a visitor error.
In the 4th inning, Corning, NY product Danny Madden made his pitching debut. He pitched one full inning and walked one batter, struck out one and allowed two unearned runs.
The Pioneers would again score one run in consecutive innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but a two run eighth inning would put the game out of reach.
The winning pitcher of the game would be Kyle Naugle, who struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth inning. Stephen Arnsten will take the loss allowing two hits, two unearned runs and striking out one batter.
The Elmira Pioneers play again at home tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs. Tomorrow’s game will feature free Thundersticks provided by Hilliard!
