Pios Give Up Runs in 5th, 6th and 7th Innings and Lose to Utica
UTICA, N.Y.- The Utica Brewers (17-20) used a three run fifth, a three run sixth and two run seventh to defeat the Elmira Pioneers (25-14) 8-3. With the win the Brewers gain one full game on the Pios in the west division standings.
After four scoreless innings the Pioneers got on the board first in the fifth. Brian Barefoot double to left field, then moved to third base on a balk. Troy Squires brought him home on an RBI groundout to shortstop and the Elmira lead was 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth Utica would take the lead for good. Dan Vucovich clubbed a triple to deep triple to center field and was driven home on an Alex Core single. A wild pitch later scored Core, and Ryan Cox hit a sacrifice fly to left center field to bring home Jared Baldinelli. The brewers had a 3-1 lead.
Continuing to score in the sixth inning was Utica. With two outs in the inning, a Vucovich two-run home run to deep left center field and a Vincent Capone RBI single brought home three more runs and the Brewers had a 6-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, Elmira cut into the Utica lead. First baseman Christian Santisteban smacked a deep double to right center field to score Taylor Hillson and Dalton Hoiles. The Brewers lead was 6-3.
Utica would pull away, though, in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off two singles from Mason McClellan and Vucovich to take a 8-3 lead. That is how the score would stand.
On the mound to start the game for the Pioneers was Mike Korchak, who went 5 2/3 innings pitched and gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out four. The lefty received his first loss of the season. For the Brewers it was left hander Collin Gee who got the start.
