Elmira Hitting Shines in Road Win Against Newark
NEWARK, NY- After losing a tough game to Newark in Elmira Saturday night, Elmira returned the favor last night with a 10-8 victory. The Pioneers pounded 14 hits on the night. Like the night before, the Pilots and Pioneers traded runs in the opening innings.
In the third inning, centerfielder Justin Hayes ripped a two-run triple and later scored on a during a Jordan Bishop at bat. The Pioneers drove home two more runs in the fourth inning. Newark scored one run in the third and one run in the fourth. Then a two-run fifth inning pulled the Pilots within a run of the lead. Pioneers First baseman Christian Santisteban and Hayes scored runs in the seventh inning and right fielder Will LaRue and left fielder Timmy Delph scored insurance runs in the eighth to pull away from Newark.
The Pilots would score two in the ninth but another comeback was stopped in its tracks and Elmira picked up the victory. Tristian Widra earned his first victory of the season with five innings pitched, six hits, funs runs and two strikeouts on the night. The losing pitcher was Will Nichol. The hurler threw four innings of 6 run ball, 2 walks and 1 strikeout.
Elmira looks to keep the momentum on their side Wednesday night when they are home to play a third straight game against Newark. Game time is at 7:05 P.M.
