Albany, NY - The Elmira pioneers first game of the season was held at Bob Belizzi field in Albany, NY against the Albany Dutchmen. The new start of the season would begin with a four hour trip and an unfortunate loss as the Pioneers drop their first game of the season 3-1. See the Box Score for the game here.
The start on the mound for Elmira was Kyano Cummings, who pitched five innings for the Pioneers. It was a rough start for the left handed pitcher as the leadoff batter, Sam Aspinall, was hit by a pitch and was given first base. Chase Crawford quickly capitalized on the opportunity as he moved Aspinall to third via a long double to left field. Slayton Vaughan of the Dutchmen later scored Aspinall in a fielders choice groundout from the returning Pioneers duo Taylor Hillson and Christian Santisteban.
After the first inning Cummings really settled into the mound, striking out 10 batters after the first and getting out of a real jam at the bottom of the fifth inning. After Cummings struck out Aspinall, Chase Crawford reached on a fielding error by Cummings as he could not handle the ball cleanly. After a 3-1 count to one Tyler Nelin, the catcher Josh Lovelady throws to John Bishop to put out Crawford for out number two as he is caught stealing. Nelin then drew a walk after a 3-2 count and advancing to second on a Slayton Vaughan single. A dropped third strike to Hunter Boose would load the bases and the Dutchmen were prepped to really grab some insurance runs. With two outs and one to go, Cummings powered his way to strike out Eric Mueller for strike number three, leaving the Dutchmen stranded and keeping Elmira in the game as they trailed 1-0 heading into the sixth.
At the bottom of the sixth Garrett Schilling made a pitching appearance for the Pioneers. He gave up two hits which would score an earned run and a wild pitch that scored an unearned run as the Pioneers went to the seventh now trailing by three runs.
The Pioneers however would not go out so quietly as the bats finally started to come alive at the top of the ninth inning. The leadoff batter, Will Larue, swung at the first pitch and saw line to right field as he hustled to second base for the double. Hillson would advance Larue by a fielders choice from shortstop to first. Christian Santiesteban then swung at the first pitch to single in Larue for the first run of the year as he stayed at first base. Troy Squires then came up to bat and after batting off five foul balls straightened it out to right field putiing Santisteban at third and earning himself a single. Unfortunately this late rally would be thwarted as Liam Conboy, a relief pitcher for the Dutchmen, would strike out the next batter and get the last to ground out to end the game.
Cummings takes the loss for Elmira as he gave up one run off of five hits, walking one and striking out 10. Also making an appearance for the Pioneers was Michael Scarcinini who pitched the eight inning walking one batter while striking out three. The winning pitcher for Albany, Nick Cioffi, will take the win. He struck out eight giving up no runs off of three hits and a walk while Liam Conboy of the Dutchmen is credited with a hold.
Also making appearances for Elmira was Tim Delph who pinch ran in the ninth inning and Mike Korchak who pinch hit in the ninth.
The Pioneers will return home tomorrow to review and reflect as they play again Thursday against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs.
