First Place Pioneers Lose in Victor
VICTOR, NY-The Elmira Pioneers one night after putting up ten runs against Newark, give up ten runs in a 10-0 loss to Victor. Elmira was no hit until the top of the eighth inning when left fielder Dalton Hoiles singled to right field off starting pitcher John Saviano. The Hoiles single would be the only hit of the ball game for the Pios.
With the loss the Pioneers fall to 7-5 on the season while Victor improves to 4-4.After a scoreless two and a half innings for both squads, the Railriders struck for two runs in the bottom of the third. After walking Victor second baseman Tommy Wagner and allowing a runner to reach via a fielder’s choice ground ball, designated hitter Mark Cardinalli slammed a two run home run to left field.
Then in the fourth inning after the Railriders blew the game wide open. Wagner singled in Victor third baseman Pete Carrier for the third run. Right fielder Brock Daniels singled to bring home Wagner and left fielder Dale Wickham. Then after an error by shortstop Brian Barefoot brought home the fourth run of the inning, Elmira starter Jared Proctor balked home Brock Daniels.
In the sixth inning a Mark Cardinalli double and a Aaron Endres single brought home three more runs to push the lead to 10-0. After a rough outing by Proctor, in which he was credited with the loss, Will Zirzow came in and struck out the side in an inning of work. Andrew Mahoney also came out of the bullpen giving up three runs in three innings of work while striking out 4.
The winning pitcher for the Railriders was Savino. Savino went 7 1/3 innings of one hit ball, and gave up no runs. Joe DeAngelis and Matthew Boone came out of the bullpen for Victor and pitched 1 2/3 innings combined of shutout ball.
The Pioneers are back at Dunn Field tomorrow night to take on the Glens Falls Dragons. There will be a STCF Free Mini Bat giveaway at the stadium.
