Late Run Secures Pioneers Victory Over Utica

UTICA, NY- After winning a close game Friday night over Utica, the Pioneers win another nail biter, 7-5, over the Brewers. It is the Pios’ third win in a row. With the victory Elmira improves to 6-4 on the season.

 

First baseman Christian Santisteban led the Pioneers’ offense going three for four with a double in the seventh inning. Santisteban also scored two runs in the contest.

 

Elmira scored first in the second inning when Dalton Hoiles singled to left field of Utica starter Michael Messier, scoring catcher Josh Lovelady and shortstop Taylor Hillson. The Brewers tied it in the bottom of the inning when catcher Dan Vucovich singled to drive home left fielder Kyle Schade and right fielder Taylor Olmstead.

 

The Pioneers then took the lead back when second baseman Tommy Mirabelli tripled to bring home Santisteban and Lovelady. In the fifth, relief pitcher Mike Korchak gave up three runs after a Schade single brought home first baseman Dominick Bregar, a Olmstead triple brought home Schade and a Tadarious Hawkins RBI groundout drove home Olmstead.

 

Elmira would tie the game in the sixth when leadoff hitter Will LaRue grounded out to bring home third baseman Keegan Maronpot.

 

The go-ahead run was driven home by Lovelady, who singled in Santisteban from second base. Timmy Delph scored an insurance run by way of an error from shortstop Ryan Rosas, which allowed Maronpot to reach base.

 

Starting pitcher Tristian Widra for Elmira went three innings, gave up five hits, two runs and struck out one batter. Messier in five innings of work gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out five. Both did not qualify for a decision in the game.

 

The winning pitcher was Korchak in relief for Elmira. The hurler went three innings, giving up three runs, while surrendering five hits and striking out one batter. Losing pitcher Jake Amoroso for Utica went 1 1/3 innings, struck out one and allowed two runs on the bump this evening.

 

Elmira has an exhibition game in Syracuse before continuing regular season play in Elmira Tuesday night against Newark. Game time for both matches is 7:05 P.M.
