Pioneers Drop Pre-Season Contest

Monday, June 3, 2013 | Categories:

Elmira, N.Y.- The Elmira Pioneers kick off the summer with a pre-season game against the Newark Pilots Monday night. With an impressive turnout of 3,021 fans in attendance it was a great evening for a baseball game at Dunn Field.

The Pioneers made it through a trialing bases loaded first inning without giving up a single run, behind the arm of Steve Klimek. In the top of the fifth inning the tie was broken up by the bat of Jacob Russell, when he hit a two-run home-run deep to center field. This gave the Pilots a two run lead after the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth the Pioneers showed life as they fought back with a walk from Frankie Navarrete that lead to a wild pitch and an error to score the first run of the game for the Pioneers thanks to a Colby Gee sacrifice fly. Frankie Navarrete’s patience was a factor in this game as he reached base in all four of his at-bats as he went 1-for-2 with a single and two walks. In addition, Steve Klimek came out in this pre-season game strong with six strikeouts, and gave up only two earned runs, all in five innings of solid pitching.

The Newark Pilots showed up tough in this preseason competition, after Russell’s big blast put them up by two runs they continued to pour it on in the seventh inning. The visitors scored five runs on two hits and five walks. In the eighth inning they piled on three more runs and never looked back giving up only one more run on a Colby Gee single. Gee went 1-for-4 with a single and two RBI’s and Dave Hoffman added to that going 2-for-5 with two singles.

The game ended with a score of 10 – 2 in favor of the visitors.
