Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers, proud members of the PGCBL, will kick of their 2013 season on Wednesday, June 5th as the Pioneers travel to Colburn Park to take on the Newark Pilots. The Pioneers kick off their opening weekend at Historic Dunn Field on Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th against the Pilots and Albany Dutchmen with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm both nights.

The Pioneers will also host a pre-season game at Dunn Field against the Pilots on Monday, June 3rd at 7:05 pm. The Pioneers will host 14 weekend home games at Dunn Field, which is the most of any PGCBL team. Elmira will play 50 games overall this season with 25 being at home and 25 on the road. “We’re excited to kick off the 125th season of Pioneers baseball in style and with having 14 home games scheduled on weekend dates. The atmosphere is sure to be more energetic than ever before” stated Pioneers co-owner Nellie Nichols.

Fans can also expect to see some changes when the 2013 season rolls around as the league will split its teams between two divisions. The Pioneers will join the Newark Pilots, Adirondack Trail Blazers, Utica Brewers and Watertown Rams in the West Division. The East Division will be comprised of the Albany Dutchmen, Amsterdam Mohawks, Cooperstown Hawkeyes, Glens Falls Golden Eagles and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs.

“With the PGCBL splitting into two divisions this season, I think it will give the fans more of an opportunity to see rivalries develop between teams as the season progresses. With there being two divisions and a new playoff format this season I think it will be an exciting environment for fans to be a part of while cheering on the Pioneers” added Pioneers co-owner Don Lewis.

The Playoff format this season will feature the top three teams from both divisions with the #2 and #3 seeded teams from each division playing a one game playoff. The winner from both games will face the #1 seed team in their division in a 3 game playoff. The winners from each division will then face off against each other in a 3 game series to determine the PGCBL Champion.
