Pioneers Announce First Two Player Signings

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers will embark on their 125th season of baseball this summer at Historic Dunn Field. The first two players that will make-up the 2013 squad are Wofford sophomore outfielder Matt Pelt and Old Dominion red-shirt sophomore pitcher Victor Diaz.
Pelt, a native of Dunwoody, GA started 18 games in 2012 for the Terriers and appeared in 30 throughout the course of the season. A right handed bat off the bench, Pelt batted .388 on the season with 77 plate appearances. Pelt picked up 26 hits and drove in 11 runners, while his .407 on-base percentage was second on the Terriers. Pelt spent last summer with the Pineville Pioneers of the SCBL.
Diaz, a native of Perth Amboy, NJ will be suiting up for the Monarchs this school year after transferring from the State College of Florida. Diaz, a right hander posted a 3.86 ERA this past season while striking out 9 batters in 4+ innings of work. Diaz has also suited up in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Summer League for the Bethesda Big Train.
When asked about the signing of these players Head Coach Matt Burch stated, “Pelt will be a player that will get on base, provide speed at the top of the line-up, and will cover a lot of ground in centerfield". “Diaz is a RHP that has plenty of upside. Victor will be in our starting rotation and is already a professional prospect."
The Pioneers local ownership group is excited about the upcoming season and look forward to building off the successes of last season. The Pioneers lead the PGCBL in total attendance in 2012. The Pioneers took their record shattering attendance numbers past the PGCBL and finished 2nd in the nation in overall attendance.
