With the holiday season vastly approaching it seems like a great time to take a look at what is happening behind the scenes at Dunn Field during the off-season. “We couldn’t be more excited about the way the coaching staff is piecing together this season’s team” stated Pioneers co-owner Don Lewis.

Matt Burch was introduced as the next head coach of the Elmira Pioneers on August 21, 2012 marking his third coaching stint with the team and second as a collegiate summer league team. The Pioneers Finished with a 17-29 record last season and Burch is ready to lead the Pioneers back to the playoffs in 2013. When asked about what type of talent fans will be able to see taking the field this summer, Burch said “If my coaching in the past is any indication of how the 2013 Pios play then fans can expect the team to pitch, play solid defense, and take an aggressive offensive approach”.

Burch last led the Pioneers from 2006-2008 and although Burch finds himself in a different league with the Pioneers going into the 2013 season, many of the teams that make up the PGCBL are former members of the NYCBL. “We have an understanding of some of the other organizations and their venues and know what they are about. We know that we will compete with them and we know how prepared many of the teams will be as well” Stated Burch when asked about the other franchises in the league.

With the early signing of Burch along with assistant coaches Archie McNelis and Brian Hill the three were able to get a good jump on signing talent for the 2013 roster. Burch noted, “Most of the schools that we are signing players from I have a relationship with their staff. It is important to recruit talent, but that talent must be backed with character”. Burch believes, “with this combination we can ensure that our players will work hard to develop their skills for the future and while doing so, compete for a PGCBL Championship in the Twin Tiers.”

The Pioneers are proud to let fans know that season tickets are on sale for the upcoming season. If you have been a season ticket holder or would like to be a part of the fun and growing tradition taking place at Dunn Field this is your chance.
