Watertown, NY – The Elmira Pioneers showed early on in their season opening game against the Watertown Rams that their bats would be filled with hits. Roberto Suppa (Cornell) got the nod for Elmira’s first game of 2014 and would hold his own, not allowing a hit over four innings of work. The Pioneers offense would feed off of the effort by Suppa as they followed with a 13-3 outburst against the Rams.
The Rams would find their way on to the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning after a stolen base by Santino Alteri (Alvernia) eventually allowed him to score on a groundout by Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M – Corpus Christi). Trailing 1-0, it would be the Pioneers turn to get on to the scoreboard in the top of the second inning as John Armbrust (East Stroudsburg) worked a leadoff walk. With two outs and the bases loaded TJ Dixon (Samford) put the Pioneers out in front 3-1 with a two RBI single.
Dixon would continue his hot start to the season by lacing a RBI double to left field giving Elmira a 4-1 lead. Leading 5-2, the Pioneers used the sixth inning to widen their lead on the night for good as they plated seven runs on four base hits. The inning was highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from Drew Fisher (USC – Upstate) and Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) that gave Elmira a 12-2 lead.
The Elmira bullpen would do their part on the night in relief of Suppa. Zach Pidgeon (Ithaca), Brandon Diorio (Ithaca) and Zach Bican (Pitt-Bradford) combined to toss five innings of two run baseball striking out five batters and walking just three. Diorio struck out three of the eight batters that came to the plate in his two innings of work. Pidgeon earned the win after pitching the fifth inning, moving his record to 1-0 on the year. Dixon finished the game 3-4 with a double and three RBI as well as a stolen base. Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) went 2-3 in the leadoff spot, reaching base four times and scoring on three occasions.
