Amsterdam, NY - The Pioneers made their first (and only) trip of the regular season to Shuttleworth Park to take on the Amsterdam Mohawks. Elmira entered the game 1-0 on the season against the Mohawks, having knocked off Amsterdam 3-2 at Dunn Field back on June 6th.
Logan Salow (Kentucky) made his first start of the 2014 season in a ballpark known to favor hitters. Salow looked solid right out of the gate as he worked around a two out single to get out of the first inning scoreless. The Amsterdam batters would show their patience against Salow in the second inning as three walks would load the bases. The Pioneers defense stood tall early on behind Salow as a force out at second base would keep the game scoreless heading to the third inning.
Offensively, Elmira would take a couple of innings to warm up against Amsterdam starter Ryan Clark. Clark would face the minimum through his first four innings of work before the Pioneers manufactured their first hit. The Mohawks, though, would produce the game's first runs as Jack Cseszewski drove a fastball from Salow over the right field wall with two runners on base to give Amsterdam a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers would pick up some momentum in the fifth inning as Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) kicked off the inning with a double. Zac Bellinger (St. Rose) would follow suit with a single of his own to move Santisteban into scoring position. A gritty play by Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) on a bunt attempt would load the bases for the Pioneers, who looked poised to get their first runs of the night. Amsterdam worked their way out of trouble by turning an inning ending double play to keep their lead intact.
Joe Guaragna (Old Dominion) helped to produce the Pioneers first run in the seventh inning as his ground out to the second baseman with the bases loaded allowed Santisteban to score to make it 3-1. Elmira would get to within one run a batter later as Jordan Taylor (Radford) hit a grounder to the first baseman, allowing an alert Bellinger to score from third and make it a 3-2 ball game. The Pioneers bullpen would hold their own in relief of Salow, combining to hold Amsterdam scoreless through the eighth inning. The ninth inning would be the Pioneers' time to shine as they loaded the bases with no outs after two walks to start the inning. The Pioneers would tie the game up 3-3 on a wild pitch and then take the lead on an RBI single from Hillson. Hillson would then round out the scoring to make it 5-3 after a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to score.
Tucker Rekucki (Bucknell) got the biggest strikeout of the night to end the game in the ninth inning as Amsterdam had the tying run on third with the bases loaded trailing 5-4. Rekucki earned his second save of the season in his second appearance against Amsterdam and helped the Pioneers to move back above .500 at 4-3. Alex Satterfield (South Carolina) earned his first win of the season striking out three over two scoreless innings of relief.
The Pioneers welcome in the Newark Pilots for a Father's Day Matinee at Historic Dunn Field on Sunday. Fans will have the opportunity to play catch with their dad on the field after the game courtesy of His Tabernacle Family Church. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4 p.m. Great seats are still available and fans can purchase tickets by visiting the Pioneers front office at 546 Luce Street.
