Newark, NY – The Elmira Pioneers (24-19) secured their 2nd consecutive post-season appearance Saturday night against the West Division leading Newark Pilots (25-19). With the win the Pioneers now sit just a half game back of the top spot with four games remaining in the regular season.
Jeremy Soule (Fairfield) made his 5th start of the summer for the Pioneers looking to improve on his 0-1 record. Soule would turn in five huge innings for Elmira as he showed great velocity on his fastball while also using his slider effectively against the Pilots. The early innings would move by rather quickly as both starting pitchers were able to work in and out of some trouble to get the game scoreless heading into the 6th inning.
The Pioneers seemed poised to get onto the scoreboard first in Newark as they had put runners on base against Pilots starter Jayson Yano but were unable to come up with the big play to produce a run. Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) would get Elmira’s offense going in the top of the 6th inning with his first hit in a Pioneers uniform, a double down the right field line. Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) would move Sinnen over to third base with his first hit of the game. With runners on the corners, Zac Bellinger (Saint Rose) would put Elmira on top 2-0 with his single into right center field as Sinnen scored easily from third. Kalousdian would score on the play as well on an error by the Pilots center fielder that got by the third baseman.
Leading 3-0 the Pioneers showed some resilience both offensively and defensively against the Pilots. Newark would load the bases up in the bottom half of the 6th inning against Soule with no outs. Pioneers Manager Matt Burch would call upon his bullpen to get out the jam as left hander Zach Bican (Pitt-Bradford) made his 13th appearance of the summer. Bican would limit the damage as a single run would come around to score in the inning to make it a 3-1 game. Matt Horton (Cornell) worked two scoreless innings of relief striking out two batters helping to keep Elmira in front.
Blake Oyler (Kentucky) would be called upon in the bottom of the 9th inning looking to convert his 2nd save of the season. Facing the heart of the Newark lineup, Oyler showed his best stuff on the mound getting two ground outs and a pop up to seal the victory for Elmira. Jason Patnick (Manhattan) and Joe Guaragna (Old Dominion) picked up two hits apiece for the Pioneers as they delivered 10 hits in the game.
