Valiant Bullpen Effort Not Enough in Pioneers’ Home Loss to Rams

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Pioneers bullpen looked as strong as ever on Sunday afternoon, but the Pioneers (12-9) fell just short against the Watertown Rams (13-9) at Historic Dunn Field.
Sam Sinnen (Old Dominion) made his fourth Pioneers start and continued his run of allowing 3 earned runs or fewer in all of his outings. However, Corbin Powers (Bellevue) would be just a bit better for the Rams, going 7 innings allowing only 1 run on 3 hits.
The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Taylor Hillson (Mansfield), and also received an RBI hit by Drew Fisher in the eighth inning. Brandon Holup (East Stroudsburg) contributed his best outing as a Pioneer thus far, allowing just a hit in 2 shutout innings. Then Austin Von Herbulis (Skagit Valley) followed by working around 2 walks to toss a scoreless eighth. Finally, Matt Horton (Cornell) made it 9 consecutive innings to begin the season without allowing an earned run as he tossed a scoreless ninth inning. The Dunn Field crowd of 2,131 cheered on their hometown team loudly with their cowbells that were handed out prior to the game courtesy of Party Time, and the Pioneers' relievers were able to give the fans the type of results they were looking for.
Other Pioneers of note included Zac Bellinger (St. Rose), who went 1 for 2 with 2 walks, and Jason Patnick (Manhattan), who followed off a strong first game with the Pioneers by going 1 for 3 with a walk. For Watertown, meanwhile, Willie Martin (Mount Olive) drove in 2 runs and Drew Hercik (East Stroudsburg) had another run batted in for the Rams.
Despite the loss, the Pioneers remain in first place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division, and you will not want to miss them when they return home to Historic Dunn Field for their USA Home-stand from Thursday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 6th. Thursday's game at 7:05 PM against Wellsville will kick things off with mega fireworks sponsored by STCF.
