Utica, NY – The Elmira Pioneers had Mother Nature on their side Wednesday night at Donovan Stadium. The Pioneers snapped their three game losing streak to pick win number 13 of the season and second against the Utica Brewers in a 4-0 rain shortened contest.
The Pioneers sent Taylor Ahearn (Siena) to the mound looking for his first win of the season in what was his second consecutive start against the Brewers. Ahearn would keep the Pioneers in the game early, working around back to back singles in the second inning to keep the Brewers off the scoreboard. The two hits would be the only blemishes for Ahearn on the night as he would go on to strike out four batters and retire the final 13 batters in order that came to the plate.
Elmira’s offense would kick into gear in the third inning against Marcos Martinez as they would plate three runs in total. Jason Patnick (Manhattan) started the inning off for Elmira with a single into left field and would later steal second base. Fellow Jasper Chris Kalousdian would drive in his teammate with a double into the left centerfield gap. TJ Dixon (Samford) and Nick Walker (Old Dominion) would match Kalousdian’s efforts with RBI doubles of their own to put Elmira on top 3-0.
Walker would finish off his multi-RBI game in the fifth inning as he drove in Dixon from third base with a SAC fly to deep centerfield to make it a 4-0 ballgame. With the Pioneers batting in the top of the seventh inning, the skies would open up and drop a torrential down pour over the confines of Donovan Stadium. A brief 10 minute wait after the rain stopped brought a meeting amongst the umpires and both teams’ managers that concluded in ending the game with the minimum five innings having already been played.
The win moves Ahearn to 1-2 on the season and Elmira to 13-11 overall with four consecutive home dates ahead of them.
