Offense, Fireworks Explode for Pioneers in Win Over Wellsville
Elmira, NY - Following the Elmira Pioneers game on Thursday against the Wellsville Nitros, there was a huge fireworks display that left the 3,084 fans in attendance mesmerized. It was an appropriate finish to the game where the Pioneers lineup had plenty of fireworks of its own on its way to 15 runs scored.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and it was only the start. Leading the way were Christian Santisteban (Manhattan), who drilled RBI singles in his first three at-bats plus also scored 2 runs, and Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan), who went 2 for 3 with a triple, a stolen base, an RBI, and a run scored. Pioneers manager Matt Burch made a series of substitutions, but it seemed like every player he put in found a way to shine. Eleven different players reached base twice in the game for the Pioneers and every player but one reached base at least once. The Pioneers offense was surging, and Pioneers fans could not have been more excited about it.
On the pitching side, the Pioneers tossed a four-hit shutout, but it took a complete team effort to get there. The Pioneers used a different pitcher in each inning, starting with Brandon Diorio (Ithaca) in the first, and finishing with Tucker Rekucki (Bucknell) in the ninth, and each of them found a way to keep the Nitros off the board. Brandon Holup (East Stroudsburg) tossed the best inning of them all, tossing a perfect third frame. Pioneers pitchers were helped out by an excellent defensive effort as Pioneers infielders turned four double plays.
The Elmira Pioneers' red, white, and blue USA Homestand jerseys were a big hit on Thursday, and fans can return to Dunn Field to see plenty more of them. Friday's giveaway will be Elm Chevrolet Mini-Bats, and then Saturday's game will feature free megaphones and an auction of the USA jerseys following the contest. Both games will start at 7:05 PM. Finally on Sunday, the Pioneers' 5:05 PM game will be Bobby K Family Sunday Funday. For tickets, visit the Dunn Field Front Office or call 607-734-2690 for information.
