Glens Falls, NY – The Pioneers came into their matchup Thursday night against Glens Falls looking to get back into the win column after dropping a heartbreaker in extra innings a night earlier. Elmira would trail early but their offense would find its old form en-route to a 10-4 win against the Golden Eagles at East Field.
Logan Salow (Kentucky) got the nod from Pioneers manager Matt Burch for his fifth start of the season. The Pioneers would look for a performance from Salow that they had got from Taylor Ahearn on Wednesday night as he was able to work into the latter half of the game. Salow had an interesting 1st inning as he was able to pick up three strikeouts but allow a run to come around to score. An error in the inning along with an RBI double from Ryan Dodge would give Glens Falls a 1-0 lead.
Elmira would respond quickly in the top of the 2nd inning against Golden Eagles starter Kevin Cowan. Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) would give the Pioneers their first hit of the night with a one out single. After a walk to Jason Patnick (Manhattan), catcher Drew Fisher (USC-Upstate) would give Elmira their first and only lead that they would need in the game with a 2 RBI double into left field to make it 2-1.
Nick Walker (Old Dominion) would give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning with the first of his two hits on the night. Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) would display his great base running skills as he scored from first base on the double by Walker. Both teams pitching would then settle in over the middle innings of the game trading zeros on the scoreboard.
After a shaky 1st inning Salow got into a groove on the mound as the Golden Eagles had no answers to try and solve the Kentucky right hander. The closest that Glens Falls would get to tying the game would come in the 5th inning as Brian Fay picked up a leadoff single. He would later score from second on an RBI single from Brandon Purcell to make it a 3-2 game. Elmira would tack on a pair of single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to take a 5-2 lead heading into the homestretch at East Field.
The Pioneers offense would not be done for the night as they erupted for five runs in the 8th inning that was highlighted by RBI hits from TJ Dixon (Samford), Derek Deler (Florida International) and Fisher. The Elmira bullpen would pick up right where Salow left off as he worked 7 innings of 4 hit baseball allowing just the 2 runs and striking out a season high 9 batters in the process. Zach Bican (Pitt-Bradford) worked a clean 8th inning with the Pioneers leading 10-2. Glens Falls would get onto the scoreboard in the 9th inning as they plated two runs against Tucker Rekucki (Bucknell) to make it a 10-4 ballgame but that would be the final score as Elmira’s defense would record the final out for the win.
Elmira improved to 17-13 on the season while Salow picked up his third win in a Pioneers uniform. The Pioneers were lead offensively in the game by Drew Fisher who finished 2-4 with 4 RBI and Chris Kalousdian who went 4-5. Elmira as a team finished the night with 8 doubles in the game and drove in all 10 runs that scored. The Pioneers return home for Country Weekend at Dunn Field as they host the Watertown Rams for two huge games in a battle for first place in the west.
