Elmira, NY - Having won their last outing against Glens Falls coupled with a loss by Watertown to Amsterdam, the Pioneers had the opportunity to take over first place in the PGCBL West Division with a win. Friday night marked the first game of a back to back series with the Watertown Rams at Dunn Field.
Bryson Hough (Bucknell) was determined to help put Elmira back into first place in his sixth appearance of the summer. Hough would get some defensive help from his teammates in the 1st inning. Watertown was able to put runners on the corners before a 6-4-3 double play would end the inning and strand a potential run at third base.
Elmira's offense would give Hough a lead to work with in the home half of the 3rd inning. Leading 1-0 Taylor Skepon (Penn State) would make it a 3-0 ballgame with a 2 RBI single against Watertown starter Mitch Sewald. The Pioneers wouldn't look back from their early lead as Hough was locked in on the mound.
Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) stole the show defensively in the 4th inning as he dove to his left on a ball hit up the middle to rob a base hit and flip the ball to Skerpon at second base to get the lead runner to end the inning. In the bottom half of the inning Chris Kalousdian would score from third base on a passed ball to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.
The 5th inning would see Elmira score their fifth run of the game in the same fashion as the previous inning. After leading off the inning with a double, Hillson would head for home after a ball got past Watertown catcher Matt Diorio. Leading 5-0 the Pioneers would take care of business the rest of the way as Hough scattered just 3 hits over the course of 9 innings worked. With the win Hough moved to a perfect 4-0 on the year with his first complete game.
Elmira (18-13) now leads the West Division by a half game over Watertown with the two squaring off again at Dunn Field on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and gates will open at 6:00 p.m. Fans will receive a FREE Elmira Pionettes Team Photo as they pass through the gates.
