Pioneers Score Late; Take Game 1 8-3 Against Newark

Newark, NY - The Elmira Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the best of 3 game series against the Newark Pilots on Saturday night at Colburn Park. The Pioneers kicked off the PGCBL West Division Championship Series with an 8-3 victory. Elmira will host the Pilots at Historic Dunn Field on Sunday afternoon as the Pioneers look to advance to the PGCBL Championship Series.
Mike Fahrman (Florida) lead the way for Elmira offensively as he finished the game 3-5 with 3 RBI. Fahrman picked up 2 doubles and a single along with a sacrifice bunt. On the mound Sam Sinnen (Old Dominion) twirled 7 scoreless innings as he surrendered just 4 hits, while walking 2 batters and striking out 2 on the night.
Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) reached base all 5 times that he came to the plate on Saturday night. Santisteban drew 3 walks while adding 2 singles and picking up an RBI. The Pioneers scored all 8 of their runs between the 5th and 7th innings, including a 4 run 5th inning against Newark starter BJ Nobles.
Sinnen improved to 1-0 in the post-season with the victory. Zach Bican (Pitt-Bradford) pitched 2 innings allowing 3 runs to score in the 9th inning but struck out 3 batter along the way. The Pioneers return home Sunday for game 2 of the series. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4:05 p.m.
