Elmira, NY - The Newark Pilots outlasted the Elmira Pioneers in game 2 of the PGCBL West Division Championship Series. With the 2-1 victory the two teams will play a decisive game 3 in Newark Tuesday night to see who will advance to take on the Amsterdam Mohawks in the PGCBL Championship Series.
Taylor Ahearn (Siena) shouldered the loss for Elmira working eight innings, striking out three batters, walking one and Allowing six hits. Despite falling to 0-1 in the playoffs, Ahearn helped to keep the Elmira bullpen fresh heading into Tuesday's matchup. Blake Oyler (Kentucky) pitched a scoreless 9th inning striking out one batter.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the 6th inning Elmira would cut the Pilots lead in half. Jason Patnick (Manhattan) would kick off the inning by delivering the Pioneers first hit of the ballgame. Drew Fisher (USC-Upstate) would score later in the inning as TJ Dixon (Samford) singled up the middle to bring in Fisher from second base to make it 2-1.
The Pioneers attempt at a 9th inning rally against Jayson Yano (Stevens) would fall short as he worked a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning. The decisive third game will take place in Newark Tuesday night as the Pioneers will look to continue the trend of the visiting team coming up victorious in the series bewteen both Elmira and Newark. With a win the PGCBL Championship Series would be a rematch from 2013 as the Pioneers would travel to Amsterdam on Wednesday for the first game of the best of three game series.
