Newark, NY - The Pioneers started the decisive game three of the PGCBL West Division Championship Series off with a bang on Tuesday night as TJ Dixon (Samford) lead off the game with a solo home run. The Newark Pilots would control the later half of the game however as they scored five unanswered runs to pick up a 5-3 victory.
Leading 1-0 in the top of the first inning, Nick Walker (Old Dominion) would drive in Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) with an RBI double to make it 2-0. The Pioneers first four hits of the ballgame would all be extra base hits just a night removed from registering three singles in game 2. Joe Guaragna (Old Dominion) put the Pioneers on top by three runs in the second inning as he drove in Taylor Skerpon (Penn State) with an RBI single.
The Pilots would start chipping away at the Pioneers lead as they picked up their first run of the game against Bryson Hough (Bucknell) in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing 3-2 going into the fourth inning the Pilots would tie up the game and then take their first lead of the game 4-3. Hough would exit after five innings of work allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out two batters.
Zach Bican (Pitt-Bradford) worked a scoreless sixth inning for the Pioneers out of the bullpen and would be followed by two more scoreless innings from Matt Horton (Cornell) who picked up four strikeouts. Both teams would use three pitchers on the night after the Pilots were able to rest their bullpen in a complete game effort from Jayson Yano a night before.
With the 5-3 loss the Pioneers saw their 2014 season come to an end after picking up an 8-3 win in the first game of the series. Elmira finished the regular season with a 26-21 record and a 2-2 record in the playoffs with their first win coming against Watertown at Dunn Field. The Pioneers would like to thank all of the great sponsors, fans, staff and players that made the 2014 season such a success.
