Elmira, NY - The Elmira Pioneers have added two very skilled players from Bucknell University for the upcoming season. The Pioneers are coming off their 2nd consecutive PGCBL playoff appearance and will look to bring a championship to the Twin Tiers. Freshman infielder Mike Korchak and Sophomore infielder Sam Clark will both add some power from the left side of the plate for Head Coach Matt Burch.
Korchak, who hails from nearby Binghamton, NY comes to the Pioneers after graduating from Seton Catholic Central High School in 2014. Korchak earned 4 letters while playing baseball and also garnered Class C New York State Player of the Year honors twice (2013,2014). The lefty is expected to see time at both first base and on the mound for the Bison going into his fist collegiate season.
"Mike is a local product that offers flexibility in that he can provide defensive insurance at first base and will be a significant contributor to our pitching staff. The lefthander will counted on to get outs against potent offenses in our competitive league." stated Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch.
Clark, who hails from Trabuco Canyon, CA is entering his 2nd season of collegiate baseball after appearing in 49 games for Bucknell a year ago. Clark started 47 games with a vast majority of them coming at third base while using his 6'5" frame to defend the hot corner. He batted .222 with 35 hits, 6 doubles and 16 RBI.
"Sam is an imposing player. At 6’5” and 215lbs, Sam will prove to be big and athletic. While providing offense from the left side of the plate, Sam will also be counted on to defend from the hot corner. I know he is eager to play for a championship in Elmira this summer." Stated Pioneers Head Coach Matt Burch.
With the 2015 PGCBL season approaching fans will be able to see two new teams in action. The new franchises will be located in Saugerties, NY and Victor, NY. The league has also approved to extend the regular season to 50 games. With the addition of Saugerties and Victor there will now be a five team west division along with a five team east division. The top three teams in each division will qualify for post season play.
