Pioneers Add Pair of Pitching Arms

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers, in preparation for their 125th season of baseball in the Twin Tiers have added two right handed pitchers for the upcoming 2013 season. Freshman Tommy Alexander (Old Dominion) and Freshman Dan Black (VCU) will add size and trickery to the Elmira pitching staff.

 

Alexander, a native of Forty Fort, PA attended high school at Wyoming Valley West. During his senior season (2012) he posted a 0.63 ERA and 103 strikeouts while also hitting .310 at the plate. For his accomplishments Alexander garnered First Team All-State and MVP honors along with leading his team in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched.

 

This season as a starter for the Monarchs he is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA and has made 13 appearances. Alexander has registered 29 strikeouts through 35.1 innings of work, while holding opposing hitters to a .270 batting average. Manager Matt Burch said of Alexander, “Tommy is a front of the rotation pitcher that Elmira fans will enjoy seeing every 5th day.”

 

Black hails from Lebanon, Pa. and was a three sport athlete at Cedar Crest HS. Black helped lead his Falcons to two district titles as well as a league title. Prior to his senior season, Black was tabbed as a preseason all-state player by ESPN. This season for the Rams, Black has appeared in 10 games and started 5 going 0-1 with a 3.67 ERA.

 

Black is holding opposing hitters to a .240 batting average and has 10 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched. Manager Burch said of Black, “Dan is a big strong right hander that commands a fastball in the low 90's."

 

The Pioneers are set to open up the 125th season of baseball at Dunn Field on June 3rd as the Newark Pilots pay a visit to Dunn Field with the first pitch set for 7:05 pm. Opening weekend at Dunn Field is set for June 7th and 8th as fans can stick around after the game both nights to enjoy a spectacular fireworks display!
