Elmira N.Y. June 13, 2013 –
Pioneers Win Third Straight.
Your Elmira Pioneers pick-up another big win tonight as the bats came alive tonight at Dunn Field. There was a lot of action at Dunn Field as the home team came away with a 7-6 victory. This is the third straight win for the Pioneers and they don’t plan on slowing down.
Scoring started in the bottom of the second inning with three hits and two RBI singles from Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) and Brian Bashara (Old Dominion). Another run was score in the bottom of the fifth inning when Christian Knott (East Stroudsberg) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Kalousdian pick up a double. Up next Brian Bashara hit a single to center field and was thrown out trying to extend the double, but not before Kalousdian could cross home plate.
Amsterdam’s first run came in the top of the sixth inning on a Kevin Guthrie (Brown) double that scored Josh Gardiner (Radford) after being hit by a pitch.
The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to score two more runs. Matt Pelt (Wofford) singled, and then scored off of a Colby Gee (Ithaca) single and a throwing error that put him on second. Gee made it to second successfully after hitting a single, putting him in the perfect position to score after a Ryan Plantier (Cornell) single to center field.
Amsterdam came alive in the seventh and eighth inning scoring two runs in both. Austin Hill (Corning C.C.) walked Ed Charlton (NJ Tech) and sent him to third on a very wild pitch. Hill came out right after that with what seemed to be an injury. Anthony Ciango (Northern Illinios) came in to get Elmira out of the jam and only gave up two runs. Devin Wenzel (Cincinnati) singled to center field to score Ed Charlton. In the Eighth inning Ed Charlton hit an absolute bomb off of Parker Curry (Samford), but it wasn’t enough as Curry came in to get the save.
Elmira’s one run in the eighth was just enough to protect the lead. Ryan Plantier hit a single to right field with Christian Knott on third base after a wild pitch to get what ended up being a game winning RBI.The Mohawks could only come up with one run in the ninth inning as they fell to the Pioneers 7-6 as Colby Gee made a great game ending play over at third base.
Tanner Hawley (Wofford) got his first win of the season on six strong innings of pitching. Tanner has only one strikeout, but threw six tough innings giving up only two hits and one run.
