Elmira N.Y. July 10, 2013 –

Your Elmira Pioneers win a nail-biter in Newark to improve to (13-13). Elmira is continuing to gain on the division leading Watertown Rams as they outlast the Pilot 3-2.

The Pioneers ended the game on a perfectly executed 4-6-3 double play to stop a serious comeback attempt by the pressing Pilots. They needed three runs to win it in the ninth, but could only get one as they fell at home.

The game was a stale-mate until the sixth inning when Brian Bashara (Old Dominion) broke through and hit a double to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Matthew Pelt (Wofford). A ground-out scored Bashara while Pelt would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan). Kalousdian has been an absolute all-star this year and is tacking on more and more RBI’s, hits, and also has an amazing .369 batting average.

Will Spitzfaden (1-4, Southeast Missouri State) will receive the Newark loss. Spitzfaden pitched a full eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Victor Diaz (1-0, Old Dominion), took the mound for his first start of the season and threw five innings of great baseball giving up only one hit. Diaz struck out three pilots and didn’t give up a single run. Parker Curry (Samford) allowed three hits and a run in the bottom of the ninth, but was awarded his second save of the season. Curry has been put in this position many times; whether it is a save situation or not Curry seems to be the ninth inning man.

The Pioneers will be playing the Eastern division leaders the Glens Falls Golden Eagles today July 10th. It is Weenie Wednesday at the historic Dunn Field and hot dogs are only one dollar. Come on out fans and watch some great baseball and enjoy dollar hot dogs. On Thursday July 11th, it’ll be Red Solo Cup Night and that mean beer will be $2 a beer.
