Pioneers Shutout the Struggling Pilots
Stellar Pitching From the PioneersThursday, November 22, 2012 | Categories:
Elmira N.Y. July 11, 2013 –
The Elmira Pioneers fought off the Pilots 4-0 last night to climb back over five hundred. Elmira now 14-13 is knocking on the door of the Watertown Rams and vying for the top spot in the West.
The story of the night for the Pioneers was pitching. When the other team doesn’t put up a run that is usually where the topic of conversation is. It has now been a solid sixteen innings since the Pioneers have allowed a run to cross home plate. Credit is given where credit is due as hitters haven’t had much of an answer for the Pioneers pitchers. Also, the defense of the Pioneers has stepped up at a crucial time in the season to help the pitchers get out of innings and protect leads.
Spencer Henderson the southpaw from UC Davis threw five innings of two hit baseball and struck out three pilots. The bullpen came in and pitched the last four innings giving up one hit and striking out two more batters. Another highlight is that between all four pitchers there was a single walk and of goes no runs given up. The committee last night out of the pen was, in order, Jimmy Tunnison (Misicordia), Clark Pence (Morehead St.), and Brandon Diorio (Ithaca).
The Pioneers are on the road today to face the Pilots once again, but will be back for two special nights Saturday and Sunday. On the 13th it is Team Photo night and fans will receive a free team photo. Then, have a special Sunday evening for Stitches Birthday… Come on out fans and celebrate 125 Years of Baseball in the Twin Tiers area with your Elmira Pioneers.
