Pioneers Add MLB Draft Pick to Pitching Rotation
Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers are proud to announce the second member of the 2014 squad. Hayden Edwards, a sophomore for the Jayhawks at the University of Kansas will toe the rubber at Historic Dunn Field this summer. Edwards is the first true throwing arm that Pioneers Manager Matt Burch is bringing in to shape up his pitching staff heading into next season.
Edwards, hails from Overland Park, Kansas and was selected in the 31st round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals. After his senior year of high school at Blue Valley High School, Edwards was ranked by Perfect Game USA as the top high school prospect in the state of Kansas. The 6’9” 190 lbs righty finished his H.S. career with a 12-4 record, a 1.95 ERA and 109 strikeouts.
The Jayhawks finished the 2013 baseball season with a 34-25 record and Edwards made 4 appearances out of the bullpen. He threw 4.2 innings allowing 4 hits and struck out 8 batters while not walking anyone. Pioneers Manager Matt Burch said of Edwards, “He [Hayden] will be a top of the rotation Right Handed Pitcher for the 2014 Elmira Pioneers. Hayden was previously drafted and was a highly touted high school player. Hayden's presence is not only great for the fans in Elmira, but speaks volumes about the reputation and competitive climate in the PGCBL.”
