Elmira, NY- The IAC tournament kicked off on Wednesday May 14th with the large schools taking the field. Thomas A. Edison (15-2, 12-2) hit the diamond against Dryden (11-6, 9-1) looking for their first championship since moving to large school classification from small school. The Purple Lions entered the game ranked 9th in New York amongst high school programs across the state.
Both teams would keep the Dunn Field crowd entertained throughout the night as they would trade runs back and forth. Edison would crack the score column first against a solid Dryden pitching staff. Trailing 2-0, the Purple Lions would plate two runs of their own to find themselves right back in the championship game. The Spartans would take the lead for good with a five run outburst in the late innings to claim their first IAC Large School Championship defeating Dryden 9-5.
The small schools will take over Dunn Field tonight as Tioga (12-1, 11-1) will square off against Union Springs (14-5, 8-2). Tioga has just one loss to their credit this season as they look to hoist the trophy against Union Springs who will be making their Dunn Field debut. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. with gates to open at 5:30 p.m.
Admission for both of the games will be $5.00 per person. Fans are reminded that no outside food or drink will be permitted through the gates at Dunn Field. While attending the games fans will be able to purchase a full slate of food, drinks and snacks from the Pioneers concession stand.
The IAC baseball tournament will showcase some of the best youth talent the Twin Tiers has to offer. For more information on the tournament contact the Pioneers front office by calling 607-734-2690.
